Client: Gloucestershire Hospitals Palliative Care Team
Brief:
The SWAN model was an initiative that was brought into the NHS to promote dignity, respect and compassion in dying and bereavement. As part of the SWAN model Gloucestshire Hospitals Palliative Care Team needed a bespoke icon to highlight the importance of dignity, respect and compassion when providing end of life care.
This was a tricky brief; the icon needed to represent the SWAN model, be distinctive, be respectful but also avoid any reference to ‘the swan song’ which could cause offence to patients. The icon needed to be used on cards that sit above patient’s beds, signs for patient doors, guidance documents for staff, educational boxes, social messaging and digital assets.
The SWAN icon was also going to be used to lead the ‘Dying Matters Week’ campaign where staff and patients were encouraged to talk about death and how they would like to be treated in death in a healthy and confident way.
To answer this brief, I created four initial options featuring different elements of a swan and water, which were then whittled down to the chosen route, which featured two feathers in a circle, designed to represent the circle of life.
